WHO IS MAMA KONG?
Many thought that Mama Kong was me but the woman behind the name is my mom, Khamkong. Mom was always known as "Mama Kong" or in Lao "Mae Kong". When you visit our home, expect to leave with a jar or a container of her famous jeow bong in your hands. Our friends and family have always said, "You need to sell this, it's like gold". Mom always thought, "Who would buy it?" or "It's not that special."
I told her, "I'm going to post a picture of your jeow bong, name it "Mama Kong" and see who would like to order it" She did not want it to be named after her at first. Mom was a modest and humble woman and didn't want the attention. I told her, "This is your recipe and you deserve to have your name on your product". She finally accepted it. The following day orders came flooding in and Mom finally believed that what she had made for years was worthy and that it is "gold".
Our jeow bong recipe has been passed down from many generations. Every time Mom made jeow bong, she had never once short cut the process or skimp on the ingredients. After her passing, I vowed to continue that tradition, her legacy. Mama Kong was not just my Mom, if you walked into our home she was your Mama Kong too. Forever, Mom, you will always be my mentor, my hero and my inspiration.
